Lib Dem Leader Cllr Ricky Duveen today called again for the resignation of Cllr Jan Gavin as Lead Councillor for Children’s Services in the wake of a devastating Ofsted inspection report published in August.
The report found serious, persistent and systemic failures provided to children who are in need of help and protection. The report assessed Reading’s Children’s Services as inadequate and Ofsted have appointed a Commissioner to ensure that improvement plans are rapidly put in place.
Ofsted specifically mentioned poor governance as a cause of the inadequate service. The Managing Director of RBC and the senior leadership of Children’s Services have resigned before the report was published. However Ofsted also heavily criticised the Political Leadership of the service but Cllr Gavin has refused to stand down and summarily dismissed previous calls to stand down as a ‘distraction.’
Cllr Duveen asked what does a Lead Councillor need to do before they are asked to resign?
The Ofsted report damned the Political Leadership but Labour councillors are placing all the blame for the inadequate service on to officers whilst refusing to accept their own inadequacies.
Cllr Duveen added ‘if this were a school Ofsted report the Head and Chair of governors, having been cited in the report, would have stood down months ago.’
