Everyone entitled to vote must now register individually rather than – as in the past – being listed on a form filled in by one member of a household. The Electoral Commission said 80% of those on the electoral register would automatically move onto the new system. But about 10 million people will need to re-register.There are also six million people in the UK who are entitled to vote but are not currently registered. In future, they will be able to register online.

But many people are unaware of these changes and we need to make sure that they don’t find out at the Polling station on May 7th – when it will be too late for them to have their vote counted!

Local Lib Dems have welcomed the extra funding secured by Lib Dem Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg to make sure everyone in our area has the chance to have their say at the ballot box. Reading Borough Council has been awarded an extra £15,783.22 to carry out extra work to ensure people are registered to vote thanks to the Lib Dems.

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Reading West, Meri O’Connell said: “For Lib Dems, it is fundamental that people don’t lose their chance to vote. I am coming across a lot of confusion from residents that I talk to on the doorstep – particularly when they are trying to register for a postal vote. So we welcome Lib Dems in Government finding this money and we will be asking the council what they plan to do to make sure more people register to get on the electoral roll”
