Liberal Democrats have chosen their Prospective Parliamentary Candidates for Reading East and for Reading West. Dr. Jenny Woods will be the Reading East PPC. Meri O’Connell will be the PPC for Reading West.
Reading East: Jenny Woods
Reading East PPC, Dr. Jenny Woods has campaigned locally on issues of importance to residents in Reading and Woodley, such as transport, education and provision of leisure facilities. Nationally, she has a high profile in civil liberties campaigning, particularly around online communications, where she was part of the Lib Dem team that successfully threw out the “Snoopers’ Charter.”
Jenny lives in the heart of Reading East. A scientist by profession, she works in the university sector connecting policy-makers with academic researchers. She also coordinates a national network of scientists tackling the global problems faced by society, like sustainability and health.
Jenny Woods, Reading East PPC said, “For me, being involved in politics is all about helping people make the changes that are needed to improve their lives. I’m proud to stand here in Reading East, fighting for the Liberal Democrat values of freedom, fairness and equality, and working to improve our community by putting power into the hands of local people.”
Reading West: Meri O’Connell
Reading West PPC Meri O’Connell has a background in public service, working in children’s homes and as a Youth Justice Worker, helping young people find employment and training opportunities.
Currently serving as councillor for Tilehurst, where she lives, Meri was elected to Reading Borough Council in 2012. Her campaigns have included making Tilehurst Triangle safer for pedestrians, and opposing the closure of the Arthur Clarke care home, where she successfully persuaded the council to ensure the land would only be used for elderly care.
Reading West PPC Meri O’Connell said, “I’m really excited about being given this opportunity to stand in my own area. I have a passion for this area and a track record of campaigning, and want to give residents a positive local choice.”
Commenting on the selections, Greater Reading Local Party Chair Margaret McNeill said, “We now have our ‘dream team’ of Meri O’Connell for Reading West constituency and Dr Jenny Woods for Reading East constituency. This strong team brings a breath of fresh air to politics, and the Lib Dems in Reading will be supporting them every step of the way.”
